Observant Officer Captures Prowler

Kalamazoo, MI:  On Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at approximately 12:15pm, KDPS Officer Matt Bombich was on routine patrol on Portage Road, when he observed a subject on a bike, looking into windows and down the driveways of businesses. PSO Bombich was aware that in his zone, a recent crime trend analysis indicated 13 burglaries in the month of May, and nine in the current month.  Most of the burglaries occurred during the day and items stolen generally were electronics.  A day prior, PSO Bombich had viewed a business security video, which had been victim to a break-in, and this subject appeared to be very similar.

After rounding the block and returning to make contact with the subject, PSO Bombich located him on foot, and now physically peering into windows. The subject fled from PSO Bombich. Upon fleeing from PSO Bombich, the subject saw an unwitting female, to whom he handed the backpack he’d been carrying.

The subject was captured and the unwitting female turned the backpack into officers at the scene. Inside the backpack and on the subject’s person a female’s purse and id were found including a cell phone, a video recorder, wireless cards and car stereos with damage from removal.

Charges are being sought against the 40-year-old Kalamazoo resident for receiving & concealing stolen property, violation of the controlled substance act, resisting & obstructing officers and malicious damage to police property. The Criminal Investigations Division will present the case to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety reminds citizens to report any suspicious behavior or criminal activity by calling 337-8994, Silent Observer at 343-2100, or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com

NEIGHBORHOOD PRIORITIES ADDRESSED

Kalamazoo, Mi:

Over the past weekend, June 12-14, 2008, the KDPS Community Policing Unit addressed several resident concerns dealing with quality of life issues that affect our neighborhoods.

With June 12th being the last official day of school for the year, The Community Policing Unit, along with the Public Safety Explorer Unit, assisted the City of Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation department with the “Summer Mania” party, celebrating the final day of school for 2007-2008.

Officers then took a proactive approach to residents concerns of crowds and loitering, by placing officers on foot and on bicycle patrol, in favor of traditional patrol cars. Officers managed to disperse several crowds and smaller gatherings, before any issues arose.

Community Policing Officers Dave Juday, Greg Magnan, and Mike Skurski then targeted neighborhood problem areas, resulting in 9 physical arrests, and 17 total charges.

KDPS Officers are committed to addressing neighborhood priorities.  If you would like to report narcotics violations, or other crimes, you may contact Kalamazoo Public Safety at 337-8994, the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team at 337-880, Silent Observer at 343-2100, or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.

Sgt. Mike Kelley and Investigator Anthony Morgan, members of the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET), were close by so they setup in the direction the suspect was last seen headed.  A short time later the two officers got a glimpse of the suspect.  When the officers approached and asked to speak with the man he started to run, but was quickly captured.

Gun Upon search, the 22 year-old Kalamazoo resident was found to be in possession of a loaded .44 Caliber Smith & Wesson handgun.    He was arrested on the following charges:  1) Felonious Assault   2) Felon in Possession of a Handgun   3) Resisting and
