KDPS Hosts the Inaugural Cops Care Station Visit Program in Partnership With Big Brothers Big Sisters

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Saturday, 3-15-08, Kalamazoo Public Safety hosted the inaugural Cops Care Station Visit Program (at Station 2 located at 1207 Bryant) in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, A Community of Caring (BBBS).  Approximately 8 "Littles", their matches ("Bigs"), and three support staff first ate breakfast. They next received an overview of the life of a Kalamazoo Public Safety Equipment Operator, participated in hands-on demos, and went on a station tour.  They also received plastic fire helmets and went for a ride in Engine 2.

Cops Care began in the fall of 2006 with a handful of Public Safety Officers matched with children in one-on-one relationships. With the support of Public Safety Senior Staff, Cops Care has expanded to give more officers the opportunity to mentor children through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

A Community of Caring has expanded Cops Care.  It is now a multi-faceted program that gives Public Safety Officers several options to interact with young people as Big Brothers or Big Sisters.
